What You SHOULD Be Buying In The January Sales

I feel like I’ve been around long enough in the fashion stratosphere to now confidently share my top sales buys in the January sales. Sale shopping should be approached with calm consideration to avoid buyer’s remorse or regretful impulse purchases. But a smart outlook that involves shopping whether online or in the stores, for timeless classics and pieces you already had on your wish list for the year ahead, can not only save you money in the long run but also help you to shop smarter to build a more responsible wardrobe on the whole.
What are the best things to buy on sale? Definitely timeless wardrobe classics and investment buys that will cost you less. Avoid loud, trending, heavy print items – they’re in the sale for a reason because they’re seasonal and the retailer needs to offload them. By sifting through a lot of rubbish, you can find pieces that will become regular staples in your wardrobe and not just trending one-offs!
It’s the time of year when those premium-quality hight-street buys and designer pieces become more affordable. Have your email alerts and notifications turned on from your favourite retailers so you don’t miss out on first dibs on the discounts.
So what are my top items to look out for to ensure you are cleverly adding to your wardrobe and making a good fashion investment:
- A good quality wool coat or trench coat. These start coming into stores and online in August for the Autumn/Winter season so by the time January comes, retailers need to sell so as to make room for the SS25 stock. You can pick up bargains in January on coats. Stick to neutral colours such as black, navy, camel and cream and streamlined styles.
- A good quality white shirt. You can never have enough good white shirts in your wardrobe. Why not invest in a good quality one that will always look good, will wash well and elevate any look.
- A good pair of jeans. Now’s the time to hone in on those denim brands that may have been out of your price bracket but now have some good discounts on their jeans. Look at Levi’s and Agolde in particular.
- Knitwear especially cashmere is worth investing in. You will always find sales on knitwear from January onwards with even further reductions going into the summer months. Stock up on neutral colours which will see you through each winter season.
- A good quality leather or suede bag. Again, this is something that is timeless and you will always get wear out if it. You can’t go wrong with a sturdy, good quality leather bag. Stick to black, brown, burgundy tan or cream as these will go with everything in your wardrobe.
- Sequins. This is probably my biggest tip. Sequins never date especially for the festive season. You will pull those sparkly beauties out of your wardrobe every Christmas without fail. If you’ve had your eye on a fab sequin piece which you know you will definitely get wear out of – make sure to swoop in for it in the sales.
- Velvet. This is up there with sequins as something that doesn’t date and looks good every Christmas and New Year. I’ve just started adding velvet to my sequin collection and I know that they will be my reliable options for the next festive season.
